Perks for patriots: territory's civil servants play Chinese-nationalism card

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong's civil servants are important to the smooth transition to Chinese rule and most top officials are being allowed to keep their jobs, unlike legislators. In southern China, a housing project is expected to boost confidence amongst future servants even further. The housing estate is intended to provide affordable housing to Hong Kong's civil servants, aimed at increasing their sense of belonging to Hong Kong, and give them closer links with the people of China. However some believe that they will be used mainly as weekend and retirement homes, and feel that the homes should be in Hong Kong.

Professionals and wealthy people in Manila, Philippines, are willing to pay for high-security housing on well-maintained estates because life without protection from crime and poverty is unthinkable. High-security housing developments are in increasing demand. Luxury villages surrounded by walled-off, patrolled areas are being developed in the Makati business district. Several developments are being constructed to address the needs of the wealthy. Some developments for the less well-off are being built.
