Yaohan sets for broad expansion in China by 2010

Article Abstract:

Yaohan International Group plans to expand in China by opening more than 3,000 fast-food restaurants, 1,000 supermarkets and several department and wholesale stores by 2010. The company will formally open a wholesale and distribution center in Shanghai, China, in Nov. 1995. Although the mart has yet to open, it already has 40,000 members, composed of consumers, restaurant owners and retailers. However, Yaohan International faces strong competition from other Asian giant retailers, such as Japan's Jusco Co. and Saison Group's Seibu unit.

Marketing army hits China

Article Abstract:

Marketing research firms are sending a number of researchers to China in the hopes of gaining better insights into the minds and buying habits of Chinese consumers. Sales of products have been slowing down in China, brought on by the deluge of products and the tightening of the budget of Chinese consumers. Researchers are hopeful of finding a basic understanding of Chinese psychology and spending to help them in their future marketing and advertising efforts.

Theme's expansion plans strike some as too broad

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong-based women's clothing retailer Theme International's Chmn. and CEO Kenneth Lai has developed a major expansion plan for the company. Aside from venturing into the menswear and accessories market, Lai plans to open additional stores in China, Taiwan and possibly the US. However, analysts believe that Theme does not have a strong enough brand image to ensure its success outside of Hong Kong.
