Permanent formwork gives flexibility and speed

Article Abstract:

The British construction industry were reluctant to use Permanent Insulation Formwork Systems (PIFS) when it was initially introduced into the UK during the 1970s. The industry was unhappy at using what was seen as a civil engineering type of material for building work. The interlocking system of formwork components are made from thermal insulation materials often in expanded polystyrene. The blocks are placed on site and then filled with concrete. The system is particularly suitable for unusual designs as it is very flexible. It is often used in self-build projects in the UK.

Developing the infrastructure

Article Abstract:

In the UK, precast concrete modules, manufactured under controlled conditions, enable precise management of the end product. Customers receive components suitable for use immediately, therefore saving production costs and time. Precast concrete has a significant role to play in the development of infrastructure and is used to line tunnels, for sign gantries, bridge beams, at airports, ports and for road building.

Flexibility, quality and speed the main reasons for optimism

Article Abstract:

There is optimism regarding the future of the construction industry in the UK, and precast concrete cladding is regarded as a material of the 1990s. Members of the Structural Precast Association are able to provide a package of design, manufacture and erection. Precast structural components are being used in prestigious projects, where careful specifications for colour and finish are increasingly important.
