Peter Rice: tributes to a great structural engineer and the designs which may now never be built

Article Abstract:

Structural engineer, Peter Rice died on Oct 25 1992. His work included the Sydney Opera House, Lloyds of London and The Pavillion of the Future at the 1992 Seville Expo. He was working on other projects including Kansai International Airport, Japan and The Louvre, Paris. Four close colleagues pay tribute to his optimistic vision of the future, confidence and willingness to learn and to encourage young engineers. Rice preferred to innovate and challenge basic assumptions in all his work.

Designs on design control

Article Abstract:

Design control in terms of quality and urban designs are being backed by the United Kingdoms Secretary of State for the Environment, following concern about the country's physical environment in town and country planning forums. It is important that local plans, design guides and briefs are considered carefully as part of the design process, although they are not expected to cover all angles of design policy.

Contractors may build defective designs but must warn of danger

Article Abstract:

Legal issues concerning the obligation of contractors to warn of the dangers of faulty designs are discussed. Two examples of court judgements are presented, urging contractors to warn of design defects, whilst at the same time limiting their obligations.
