Philip Morris readies aggressive global push: division spinoff enables blitz of new products; high-tar smokes in Asia

Article Abstract:

The board of directors of Altria Group Inc. are expected to approve splitting off Swiss-based Philip Morris International Inc. from Philip Morris USA, thus freeing PMI from US regulations on tobacco products. PMI would be free to begin developing new products to increase corporate growth, such as full-tar cigarettes in China.

PKN Orlen's Czech challenge

PKN Orlen S.A. of Poland is restructuring its subsidiary Unipetrol AS of the Czech Republic in a bid to increase market share and become the leader in the European market. Unipetrol AS is being turned around with the divesting of noncore assets, pesonnel changes and the clearing out of legal disputes.
