Philippine APEC initiative raises questions in U.S

Article Abstract:

The Clinton administration has expressed concern over a Philippine government proposal to expand the role of the private sector at the next Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting. US officials are worried that the plan to establish an APEC Business Forum could affect the effort to coordinate the lowering of trade and investment barriers. Philippine officials have reassured their counterparts in the US that the APEC Business Forum will work under the aegis of the APEC Business Advisory Council.

U.S., Manila set changes to pact on air services

Article Abstract:

The US and the Philippines signed a memorandum of understanding which supplements the 1982 US-Philippine air transport agreement, in Sep. 1995. Under the memorandum, each country will designate two additional cargo carriers to serve the US-Philippine market. The memorandum also specifies the granting of international service rights to US cargo carriers. Such a provision will make it even harder for Philippine Airlines Inc. and a new Philippine cargo carrier to compete in the trans-Pacific market.
