Duke raises Endesa bid, confronts Spanish rival

Article Abstract:

Duke Energy Corp. made an increased bid to acquire Empresa Nacional de Electricidad SA. Duke made a bid of $3 billion for Empresa, an electric firm based in Chile. Duke is engaged in a battle with Spanish-based Endesa SA for Empresa. Empresa is also known as Endesa. Empresa shareholders must decide by April 22, 1999 whether or not they want to tender their stock with Duke or with Endesa.

GE's Welch, wife set terms for divorce agreement

General Electric Co.'s former chief executive and chairman, John F. Welch Jr., has reached a divorce settlement with his wife, Jane Beasley. The settlement avoids what could have been embarassing open court proceedings.

Sotheby's must pay a $45 million fine after guilty plea

Sotheby's Holdings Inc. will pay a $45 million (48.1 million euros) fine after it pleaded guilty in a price-fixing case in the US. Sotheby's was charged with colluding on commissions.
