ADB loan fund could be imperiled by some members' reluctance to donate

Article Abstract:

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is looking to wealthier member-countries such as South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore to help replenish its depleted loan fund. These countries are, however, reluctant to grant the ADB's request for increased contributions despite the fact that ADB interest-free loans are partly responsible for their present prosperity. ADB officials warn that the Asian Development Fund could be exhausted by early 1997 unless members infuse more money into it.

Where's the export boom?

Article Abstract:

Exporters in Asia claim the sharp currency depreciations in the region failed to result in an expected export boom. Exports from Southeast Asia and South Korea are flat or down when compared to exports in 1997. According to Sergio Ortiz-Luis, president of the Philippine Exporters' Confederation, if inflation occurs, it is not certain whether the peso decline will offset the increased costs.
