Philips, Lucent are likely to abandon joint phone venture after steep losses

Article Abstract:

Philips Consumer Communications (PCC), the joint venture firm of Lucent Technologies Inc. and Philips Electronics NV, is expected to be disbanded by its parents after the firm posted a deficit of about one billion guilders ($540million) in its first year of operations. The company, 60%-owned by Philips, was intended to become one of the world's top maker of cellular handsets. However, fierce competition from rivals that include Telefon AB L.M. Ericsson, Motorola Corp. and Nokia Oy, together with production and management problems at PCC has resulted in an insignificant share of the market.
