Conflict, contradiction at Japan's helm

Article Abstract:

Japan will have to enact painful fiscal reforms to solve its domestic budget deficit. The fiscal reforms are in the form of massive devaluation of the yen to 150 yen per dollar and domestic reflation. These fiscal reforms have helped companies service their debt, helped banks reliquify their assets and helped the standing of Japanese stock on the international market. Japan's current budget troubles come from its informal pact with its corporations, whose social contract of ensuring work for Japanese and maintaining high living standards is causing an artificial environment of mispricings, when it should be based on the laws of supply and demand.

Can the voter stand the pain?

Article Abstract:

While Japan heads towards a recession, voters are being given the chance to vote for economic reform in Upper House elections this summer. If Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi can push forward pro-reform policies based on voter's wishes, Japan may be able to break out of its debt cycle. However, very strict and perhaps unpopular measures will be needed to dissolve a real public debt reaching upwards of 300% of gross domestic product.

Paralysis in Indonesia

Article Abstract:

Indonesia's economy is in crisis and needs restructuring for a balanced budget. The current budget ignores the Indonesian Bank Restructuring Agency which has bought the country's bad debts with government bonds. This strategy is not likely to attract foreign investors or lenders and will keep Indonesia in a state of poverty.
