Philips' earnings show improvement

Article Abstract:

Philips Electronics NV posted net profits that were higher than expected for the first quarter of 1999. Philips, a electronics giant based in the Netherlands, announced that its net from ongoing operations increased by 46% to 469 million euros ($497.5 million) during the quarterly period. During the same period in 1998, the firm posted 321 million euros. Philips' profits were helped by one-time gains worth 180 million euros.
