Rating environmental impact

Article Abstract:

The European Community is developing a system of eco-labelling that will quantify a product's life-cycle environmental impact. When products are eco-labeled, purchasers should be able to compare their environmental impact but the system depends on judgements that may not supported by much hard evidence and could be disputed. The United Kingdom Eco-labelling Board has been set up to promote the scheme and to develop criteria and applications for it. Some construction products are already subject to life-cycle assessment, environmental impact and audit.

Half-year report

Article Abstract:

Most employees at BRE are realistic about the need for change, according to Managing Director Martin Wyatt. He believes that it was necessary for changes to be implemented as quickly as possible after a management team gained control of the organization for 1.7 million pounds sterling. BRE has now been restructured into functional units, with four main divisions focusing on fire, construction, environmental best practice and indoor environment. The UK construction industry seems very positive about BRE's new structure.

Strategic design for fire

Article Abstract:

There is growing emphasis in the UK on taking a fire-engineering approach to fire safety for large buildings. This is reflected in 'Fire Engineering,' a new publication from CIBSE. The fire-engineering approach has developed as understanding of how fires develop and how people behave in fires has improved. The CIBSE publication emphasizes a strategic approach to fire, instead of looking at ways of meeting the requirements of specific legislation.
