Picking up steam

Article Abstract:

Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM), Malaysia's national railway, plans to diversify so that it will be more attractive to investors after it is privatized in 1997. Chmn Tan Sri C. Selvarajah believes that diversification will ease the operating costs and other problems that have limited KTM's profits. Projects being planned include the conversion of the firm's headquarters into a tourist hotel and the development of KTM-owned land in Malaysia and Singapore. The firm is counting on modernization and track-electrification to boost ridership and hence earnings.

All aboard

Article Abstract:

Malaysia's state-owned railway operator Keretapi Tanah Melayu and a Canadian firm of transport engineers are planning to create an integrated bus-rail transport system for Kuala Lumpur to solve its traffic problems that could hinder its economic growth. The plan involves making full use of an existing network of barely-used railway tracks in the inner city and purchasing foreign-designed rail cars and buses to be assembled in Malaysia. The plan currently has the support of the city's major bus companies and the Malaysian government.
