Polluters will play

Article Abstract:

There is expected to be progress on the environmental front in New Zealand, whatever the outcome of coalition negotiations. The National Party is in November 1996 discussing the possibility of a coalition with both the Labour Party and the New Zealand First party. New Zealand First's environmental policy has the backing of Simon Upton, the National Party Environment and Conservation Minister, who believes that New Zealand has more per capita pollution than a lot of other industralised countries, but Labour has shown increased interest in the environment since 1993.

The power of green: dealing with pollution is becoming a major issue for the region's officials

Article Abstract:

Environmental and ecological activists have long held sway in New Zealand, where many people are active outdoors and low population densities make some regulations easier to live with. Popular pressure and the transition of several activists into parliament have helped make the government responsive to environmental concerns, leading to the 1991 passage of the Resource Management Act and its establishment of sustainability as the main criterion for development. However, not all industries and government departments are cooperative.

One law for all

Article Abstract:

New Zealand is the first country to pass comprehensive resource management legislation whose main criterion is the sustainable management of physical and natural resources. The new legislation emphasizes environmental effects rather than regulation of activity with sustainability of the physical environment as its central concern while taking social and economic factors into consideration. Environmental groups are finding increasing international interest in the new legislation.
