Pirates kidnap Walt Disney: a few firms jeopardize China's economy

Article Abstract:

The US-China dispute over protecting intellectual property rights reflects mixed Chinese interests and lack of US creativity. The police who should be raiding illegal factories report to people profiting from the illegal trade, but if China wants to, it can conduct such crackdowns quickly and efficiently. The US should offer positive inducements and aids to law enforcement and US industries should explore ways to license the pirates. In the meantime, international trade organizations must enforce their standards.

Pirates no more: China, Taiwan, Korea now big rights buyers

Article Abstract:

China, Taiwan and South Korea surprised many publishers by engaging in a staggering amount of copyright purchasing from Western and Asian publishers during the October 1992 Frankfurt International Book Fair. The three countries, like many other Asian publishers, are notorious for reprinting or translating foreign works without paying authors. Titles by Chinese authors were represented through Taiwanese publishers, who have earlier obtained copyrights in earlier meetings with mainland Chinese publishers.
