Planning principles in pre- and post-independence Singapore

Article Abstract:

Singapore is a planned city state with a high GNP, but despite its uniqueness, some lessons can be transferred to third world planning situations. Singapore was the subject of development plans even in the days of colonialism, and continued planning has allowed Singapore to avoid the problems associated with rapid and unplanned urban growth. The key issue has been a strong level of commitment to planning by the government. Singapore planners now face a challenge of meeting the environmental demands of an affluent, educated community and helping promote economic growth.

The use of computer visualisation in planning control: an investigation of its utility in selected examples

Article Abstract:

The benefits of using computer visualisation in planning control are illustrated by an investigation of its use by local planning authorities in considering three development proposals. Computer visualisation proved useful in considering proposals for the redevelopment of a leisure complex and for the building of extensions to residential property. Although computer visualisation is unlikely to resolve conflicts of interest, it can help lay people make informed decisions by providing three-dimensional views of proposed developments.

Professional ethics in town planning: what is a code of professional conduct for?

Article Abstract:

Debates over the professional ethics of town planners focus on two main issues: the general belief that such professions function primarily for their own good and the need for public service professionals to re-emphasise and re-confirm their professional ethics. The Royal Town Planning Institute's Code of Professional Conduct is discussed in relation to professional ethics and ideals.
