Pleasures of the environment

Article Abstract:

Environmental design for the workplace is increasingly focusing on the enhancement of natural qualities rather than on negative aspects such as anti-pollution and energy-saving considerations. Environmental design now takes into account sound and air movement as well as the use of light, aesthetic qualities and avoidance of discomfort. Guidelines for an environmental design standard are difficult to establish due to the different perceptions of people to their working environments. Issues of environmental design are discussed.

Transparent fit-out from Commerzbank

Article Abstract:

Foster and Partners has designed the interior of a four-storey 60 metre triangular building for Commerzbank in Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany. Two sides of the new building incorporate offices and the third is to be used as a garden area. German legislation requires that workers must be situated near a window therefore Foster has used glass for partitions. Foster has created open meeting areas at the corners of the building which is a new concept for German office workers.

Hives, cells, dens and clubs

Article Abstract:

The New Environments for Working study by the BRE and DEGW aims to match types of buildings and services to different work patterns, at a time when many firms are changing their working patterns. The studies have defined four work patterns: hive, den, cell and club. By 2006, an increasing number of organisations are expected to shift more towards the club model, which lends itself to space-sharing methods such as hot desking.
