Singapore Telecom has failed to acquire Time Engineering, despite having put in a good offer. The deal was opposed by Malaysia's prime minister, Mahathir Mohamad. The impact of the failure of the acquisition is examined in detail.

Olivetti has made a bid for Telecom Italia and this caused caused surprise among some observers. An initial bid was turned down by the regulators, and Telecom Italia has had time to prepare a defense. There are elements of traditional Italy in the bid, such as government intervention through its stake in Telecom Italia, and government opposition to foreign bidders, but the bid could help to modernize Telecom Italia. Olivetti sees its managers as the best to run Telecom Italia, though not everyone is in agreement with this.
