Conservation must be useful

Article Abstract:

The main concern behind the conservation of listed buildings must be keeping the buildings in use rather than arguing over every last detail, according to English Heritage Chief Exec Chris Green. Speaking at a conference on conservation, Green called for 'creative re-use' of buildings. English Partnerships Chief Exec David Taylor is also worried that while conservationists argue over detail and threaten restoration schemes, historic buildings deteriorate and become costly to refurbish.

Putting our streets to rights

Article Abstract:

The 'Edinburgh Streetscape Manual' produced by architect and urban designer Colin Davies makes a valuable addition to the debate about the future of the urban street scene in the UK. The publication was commissioned by a number of organisations with interests in ensuring that uncoordinated approaches to traffic engineering do not permanently damage the rich townscape of Edinburgh, Scotland. It presents a methodology which could easily be applied to other urban environments, even if they are less rich than that of Edinburgh.
