Plots and plotting

Article Abstract:

Philippines' largest land developer Ayala Land Inc faces tough competition from the Filinvest Development Corp and Philippine Realty and Holdings Corp. Ayala's prosperous business district at Makati, which houses several big corporations and bringing a major share of Ayala's income, is rivaled by Filinvest's Alabang and Philreality's Edsa-Ortigas business centers. Although the new projects can bring no harm to Makati's commercial viability, the development of the national Philippine Stock Exchange at Edsa-Ortigas might prove to be the greatest disadvantage for the Ayala group.

Tan's smokescreen

Article Abstract:

Proposed legislation in the Philippine House of Representatives aims to close a tax loophole that has enabled magnate Lucio Tan's Fortune Tobacco Corp to avoid paying billions of pesos in tax annually. Under the present system, ad valorem tax is computed on the basis of the ex-factory cigarette price. To avoid paying the full duties, Fortune Tobacco has been depressing the ex-factory prices of its cigarettes and sellingthem to trading companies which Tan reportedly owns. These companies in turn sell the cigarettes at market prices.

The poorest relation

Article Abstract:

The Philippines' capital markets are among the most primitive in Asia. The country's financial status ranks below that of neighboring Thailand and Malaysia. There are no long-term credits and money is considerably costly. The economic mismanagement and political instability of the past have taken precious toll on the country's capital markets. Furthermore, the burdensome taxes imposed on financial instruments discourage investment activity.
