Article Abstract:

An inquiry is being carried out into the kidnapping of tourists in Yemen in Dec 1998. One issue that the British team will assess is whether there was a need for the gun battle that resulted in the hostages being freed, but also in the deaths of four of them. The men involved in the kidnapping were not part of a particular tribe, and claimed to be devout Muslims. The government claims an international conspiracy, and critics argue that this could be a bid to divert criticism of its actions, but the claim could be true.
