Services rendered: prime minister tackles party claims for ministries

Article Abstract:

Chuan Leekpai was elected as the 20th prime minister of Thailand with circumstances favorable for an extended smooth transition. Thailand's economy has started to pick up with the Bangkok Stock Exchange showing a record turnover as Chuan's government moved into power. In addition, the military leadership and parliamentary opposition appear inclined to cooperate with Chuan's efforts. To provide an effective leadership, Chuan must keep his five-party coalition united and control the opposition led by militarists and veteran politicians.

The straight and narrow

Article Abstract:

Thailand's Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai hews to principle in his politics, deftly avoiding political controversy. His style is boring compared to previous leaders, but he seems to be maintaining the government and meeting its obligations without creating great new problems. His biggest challenges are holding on to his coalition in the midst of political attacks from every direction, and staying squeaky-clean without appearing indecisive.
