Poor students

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom government is changing funding arrangements for students, and state support is being reduced. The government claims that it wants to widen access to university, and that less funding will not deter people from studying. The number of adults seeking to become students has dropped, as has the number from poorer families, and black applicants. Universities can seek to become more open to such students, but they cannot help such students when they are at university in terms of lack of funds.

The Scottish play

Article Abstract:

Scotland's first minister, Dinald Dewar, has sacked John Rafferty, his chief of staff, and there are divisions in Scotland on the issue of tuition fees universities. The Labor party argues that this will help to expand the university system, and the previous system, with grants for students, helped rich students, paid for by tax payers. The Liberal Democrats oppose the move. The differences of opinion on this issue affect coalition government in Scotland.
