Power brokers

Article Abstract:

The West German banking industry is under increased political pressure to limit its heavy influence over industry. Deutsche Bank (DB), West Germany's largest bank, has come under special attention since it used its financial power to facilitate Daimler's takeover of Messerschmitt-Bolkow-Blohm and Siemens' takeover of computer maker Nixdorf. DB officials sit on the boards of directors of many corporations, and in the case of Nixdorf, officials prevented AT&T's acquisition of the firm. The banking industry influences industry through the pooling of proxy votes or by influencing boards of directors. Political opposition to the wide reaching influence of the banking industry has lead to legislative proposals that would limit the shareholdings of banks in companies, including a limit of 15% proposed by the ruling Christian Democratic Union.

Fear of the unknown

Article Abstract:

Czechoslovakia is undergoing rapid economic change, and Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences senior research fellow Ondrej Landa is helping Czech businesses to adopt Western management practices and to overcome four decades under Communist rule. Landa has gained experience in Western management practices because of his work in management training over two decades and because of connections with US and European management experts. Landa believes the basis for Czechoslovakia's recovery will depend on stimulating creative talents; investing in local business partners; and not demanding quick, outstanding results. Currently Landa is organizing a large European management conference to be held in Prague on Oct. 22-25, 1990; the conference is expected to draw more than 3,500 business leaders.
