Power couple: tacit opposition alliance alarms ruling Golkar party

Article Abstract:

Abdurrahman Wahid and Megawati Sukarnoputri have come increasingly closer on political issues, forming an unspoken alliance between Wahid's Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Megawati's Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI). The ruling Golkar Party is alarmed because Megawati's father was the country's first president and the NU is the largest Muslim mass movement in a mostly Muslim nation, though it is not a political party. Golkar pressure has kept the PDI largely on the defensive, but it could make gains in upcoming elections.

The limits of popularity
