Power from the people

Article Abstract:

Clockwork was a pioneering precision technology, and could again become fashionable. Freeplay is developing landmine detectors and a global positioning system for the US military, using clockwork technology. Freeplay has developed rechargable batteries, an improvement on simple spring technology. The company is also developing an ultracapacitator able to store electrical energy and retain it over an indefinite period, allowing handsets to be free of degradable components.

Batteries

Article Abstract:

The UK battery market reached 386 million pounds sterling in 1996, up 33% from 1991. Sales are led by primary cells, with the two leading players being Duracell and Ever Ready, with a combined 62% value share of the market. Some 65% of all value sales were represented by alkaline batteries in 1996, which is steadily eroding the zinc batteries' market share. Battery sales are forecast to reach 505 million pounds sterling by 2001, up 31% from 1996.
