Powerful partners: Hongkong and French utilities plan big Chinese venture

Article Abstract:

China Light and Power, Hongkong's largest electric utility, is close to reaching a deal with the French Government-owned Electricite de France to provide electricity for China's Shandong province. The partnership would receive a guaranteed return rate on energy in the province and is expected to cost $2.5 billion. China's willingness to seek outside help in the deal is a sign of that country's desperate need for energy in many of its regions. It is likely that China will eventually adopt a regulatory system for utilities similar to that of Hongkong's.

Charged up: foreign firms plan Chinese power ventures

Article Abstract:

China's government has reacted to the country's need for electric power by allowing foreign companies to invest in the building of power plants. Two such joint ventures were announced in Mar 1993: between Hongkong-based Cathay International Group and Shandong, China's Shengli Petroleum Administration to construct two power plants and remodel two others; and between Colorado-based Wing Merrill International and Henan Province to construct coal-fired power plants. About 30 to 40 more such projects are being planned.
