Boardroom brass: Premier tries to ease army out of state sector

Article Abstract:

Thailand's interim Prime Minister Anand Panyarachun is under public pressure to decrease the military's involvement in state enterprises which have become the financial and power base of the military establishment. The Thai public has been infuriated by the massacre by the army of anti-government demonstrators during the regime of General Suchinda Kraprayoon. Furthermore, the military needs to be defanged to avert another power grab. Anand, however, has to move carefully and adroitly in his demilitarization of governmental business to prevent the occurrence of countermoves.

Lost mandate

Article Abstract:

Although Somboon Rahong has already been named by the coalition as a possible replacement for Suchinda, House Speaker and Acting Pres of Parliament Arthit Urairat has not yet acted on the nomination amid perceptions that Somboon wouldrule as Suchinda had.
