Predator to prey: Foreigners swoop on ailing Japanese companies

Article Abstract:

Foreigners are buying ailing Japanese companies. AIG of the US has bid for Aoba Mutual Life and GE Capital is to take over 90% of Toho Mutual Life, with Daimler Benz of Germany planning to buy a stake in Nissan Diesel. Businesses in Japan are having the same problems of lack of demand and falling sales as its neighbors, and companies are selling shares for survival. Japanese would prefer to merge with each other, but companies are not acting quickly enough to beat foreign competition.

House of cards

Article Abstract:

Investment trust analysts were not shocked when the nonbank financial institution China Agribusiness Development Trust & Investment Corp. was closed after its business activities became out of control. The company had been mismanaging massive credits for years despite president Zhai Xinhua's assurances that it was performing well. Its stock and property market investments were operating without official controls since 1994.

Pie in the sky

Article Abstract:

A property deal in Hong Kong, in which Hongkong Land Holdings Ltd is selling the exclusive Nine Queens Road Central tower to several companies which have connections with mainland-China, has caused much speculation because of its complexity and the unclear aims of those involved. The sale emphasizes the growing complexity of the Chinese presence in Hong Kong and may be a backroom transaction and a case of money laundering.
