Paper tigers

Article Abstract:

There are 10 major national daily newspapers in S Korea which are competing for readers. Delivery boys steal newspapers from rivals while readers are not always able to read the newspapers they want. The newspaper publishing industry is dominated by conglomerates such as Samsung Group. There are possible conflicts of interest and political motives may influence some owners since only the major four newspapers are reported to be profitable. Public opinion can be molded to favor conglomerates and information can be obtained on government departments which could be useful in obtaining contracts.

Taming the spooks

Article Abstract:

The Agency for National Security Planning in South Korea, its most notorious intelligence organization, has vowed to adopt a politically neutral role and therefore stop unconstitutional activities including surveillance of opposition leaders. It has also resolved to stop joining strategy meetings of ministries or the ruling party before elections and watching the activities of journalists and advising newspaper editors on what to print. The reform is seen as essential in the country's movement towards a more open and democratic society although the extent of it is difficult to determine.
