Day of reckoning: ruling KMT's majority could slip in polls

Article Abstract:

Taiwan's ruling Kuomintang party (KMT) will probably suffer in legislative elections on Dec 2, 1995, while the Democratic Progressive Party and the New Party expect dramatic gains. Factors in the election include infighting in the KMT, leading to increased corruption; a crackdown on vote-buying; and widespread perceptions that the current government has dealt poorly with threats from Beijing, and with an ailing stockmarket and struggling economy. The campaign has moved largely onto call-in cable TV talk shows.
