Accidental tourist: Taiwan foreign minister's Japan visit sparks row

Article Abstract:

Taiwan Foreign Minister Fredrick Chien's unofficial visit to Japan has created strained relations between the two countries. Chien bitterly criticizedJapan's attitude of allowing China to dictate the direction of Japanese foreignrelations with Taiwan. Taiwan further reasoned that Japan's 'go slow' foreign policy does not coincide with the open policy being adopted by Asian countries.Irked with the remarks, Japanese officials argued that they had never considered any kind of political implication regarding Chien's trip.

The Hinschu Science Park south of Taipei is one popular site, though even there the usual Taiwan problems apply concerning inconsistent power supply and difficulty arranging land.

Seeds of despair

Article Abstract:

Farming as a way of life is fast-disappearing from many Northeast Asian countries. Descendants of established farmers have begun to look towards the cities, rather than the countryside, as a potential source of income. In the near future, as protected rice markets of various countries become more susceptible to ongoing economic changes, many observers believe that farmer support on major ruling parties of several Asian countries may become very limited.
