Private funding could get reusable space launcher off the ground

Article Abstract:

Space Access, the California-based company founded by Stephen Wurst in 1994, has announced it has attained a breakthrough in ramjet design that would allow flying of a fully reusable space launch system in 2002. To support the development, the company is currently arranging a multi-million dollar package of private investment. The system, if developed successfully, will be offered by Space Access to the Pentagon, competing directly to the Evolved Expandable Launch Vehicle (EELV) program of the US Air Force. Space Access' new ejector design, which uses liquid hydrogen as fuel, is claimed to be more efficient than the ejector ramjets tested in the 1960s.

Fraser-Volpe has created the new Miniature Integrated Camera Eye (MICE), which is capable of forwarding colored images to a command center that is as much as 16 kilometers away from the user. The MICE system, which is equipped with a 725-gram miniature video camera, can be directly connected to any electro-optical or optical sensor's eyepiece. Fraser-Volpe was also helped by the US Army Infantry Center in creating an operational-equivalent specification through tests on the MICE system from distances ranging from 9.6 kilometers to 4.8 kilometers.
