Prodi's Olive Tree wilts

Article Abstract:

The Italian coalition government has survived for two-and-a-half years, the second-longest of any government in Italy since 1945. The Olive Tree coalition has been left without a parliamentary majority following the withdrawal of support from the Refounded Communists. Prime minister, Romano Prodi, may resign if he loses a vote of confidence. Prodi has achieved his goal of entering Italy into European monetary union, and the government has since appeared increasingly tired.
