Article Abstract:

Cladding is defined as non-loadbearing clothing of walls and roofs. Cladding systems have to be resistant to wind and water and may need to provide thermal and sound insulation, fire resistance, security and ventilation. Timber, clay tiles, bricks and stone are all used for cladding, and curtain walling is a type of cladding that comprises a structural exposed grid with glazing and infill panels. Enthusiasts of minimalist cladding and glazing systems choose Pilkington's Planar glazing. Other interesting cladding systems include Kalwall where panels consist of reinforced fibreglass sheets bonded to aluminium beams.

Product review

Article Abstract:

Cladding and curtain walling are increasingly popular building materials because they transform building use and appearance. The usage of lightweight, non-loadbearing skins began in the 1930s. Some curtain walling materials are used to protect buildings from bomb blasts. Composite cladding panels are made from stainless steel, galvanised Colourcoated steel or aluminium with paint or anodised finishes. Precast concrete cladding material is popular in modern architecture.

Product review

Article Abstract:

UK architects involved in energy-efficient design now have a wide range of products to choose from. When selecting, it is important to be aware of the amount of energy contained in the materials and components available and the likely durability of the product. Areas where new energy-efficient products are available include cladding, roofs, glazing, heating, lighting and controls.
