Product review: space frames reached the peak of popularity in the 1970s but are less popular today

Article Abstract:

Space frames reached their peak of popularity in the 1970s, but today the traditional space frame is mostly confined to temporary and exhibitions, even though technical developments have extended their possibilities. New materials have led to more transparent and translucent roof structures that allow light in but keep heat in. Single-ply roofing membranes have increased in availability in the UK during the past 25 years, and they can be applied to various shapes of roof. A number of artificial slates have been introduced to the market, providing realistic alternatives to the natural quarried product. A price guide for pitched and flat-roof specifications of tiles, slates, single layer, and built-up felt roofing is provided.

The quest for space

Article Abstract:

Many office buildings in the UK have inefficient net-to-gross floor area ratios. This is particularly the case with buildings designed in the 1950s and 1960s, where large stair, plant and lift lobby areas are common. However, it is often possible to increase the available space in these buildings. This may involve replacing the furniture, for example, or refurbishing the services. Flexible building layouts are likely to become more important as more people lead a peripatetic working life.
