Productivity and unemployment: some international comparisons

Article Abstract:

There has been considerable debate recently about the relative merits of the approaches to job creation adopted in continental Europe and in the UK and the US. The US/UK model emphasises the need for considerable labour market flexibility, thus bringing reduced job security and a limited role for the trade unions. In contrast, the continental European model stresses job security and extensive worker participation. The UK has certainly seen improvements in labour costs, productivity and unemployment, but it remains uncertain whether flexibility will boost competitiveness in the long term.

The future of the International Monetary Fund

Article Abstract:

Recent cases of monetary instability have played a role in prompting debate about the present and future roles of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Some observers believe that the IMF should be disbanded, with its resources being allocated elsewhere, while others see it as playing a vital role but needing a large increase in its resources to be truly effective. Its future role is likely to focus on providing emergency finance.
