Profit-based FMS dynamic part type selection over time for mid-term production planning

Article Abstract:

The solution to a profit-based dynamic part type selection problem in a general flexible manufacturing system is discussed. A mathematical programming model based on the column generating method is formulated to solve the problem. The model considers the production plan as a sequence of steady-state cyclic schedules which enables the processing of a particular batch of selected part types. Experimental studies show that the model is computationally tractable for problems of moderate size.

Turnpikes in flow control models of unreliable manufacturing systems

Article Abstract:

The concepts of a hedging point and a turnpike property are correlated to advance maintenance theory concerning flexible manufacturing systems subject to random failure. The turnpike property refers to the global asymptotic behavior of optimal trajectories in stochastic control models characterizing such systems. It is demonstrated that this turnpike is equivalent to the hedging points used in manufacturing flow control models.

Planning and scheduling approaches to operate a particular FMS

Article Abstract:

A detailed discussion of a flexible manufacturing system (FMS) is outlined. Included in the discussion are the parameters and limitations of a complex FMS comprised of 11 COMAU MSR-15 numerically controlled machine tools and other related auxiliaries. The difficulties of everyday operations are analyzed and suggestions for efficient running are provided. Areas of concern include tool management and loading problems.
