Promises, promises

Article Abstract:

Leader of the United People's Freedom Alliance swept the polls held in Sri Lanka but she may find it very difficult to deliver on the promises made during her campaign trail and implementing financial reforms could well mean doom for the government. The country's finance minister, however is confident of delivering and says that they has to increase revenue for social welfare but investors are concerned about reforms with bourses recording a sharp fall after results were announced.

Sri Lanka's forgotten heroines

Article Abstract:

Migrant workers amount to 14.5% of the workforce of Sri Lanka, and over 8000,000 of the 1.2 million Sri Lankan overseas employees are female. Remittances from women migrant workers reached $2.17 million in 2006, becoming Sri Lanka's second-highest source of foreign exchange. The impacts of female overseas workers on Sri Lankan economy are examined further.

Committed to peace

Article Abstract:

Lakshman Kadirgamar became the foreign minister of Sri Lanka for the third time after the narrow general election victory of a coalition held by President Chandrika Kumaratunga. He maintains that the new government will sustain the peace initiatives of its predecessor and do more to bolster the livelihood of poor farmers.
