Prospects and forecasts for consumer spending in Europe

Article Abstract:

Consumer spending in the seven largest European economies rose by 2.8% in 1998, with consumer spending replacing exports as the main driving force for economic growth. It is forecast that consumer spending will slow down in most of Europe in 1999 compared with the strong growth seen in 1998. However, consumption will continue to drive economic growth in the medium term. Consumer spending growth of above 3% is forecast in Spain and the Netherlands, but growth of less than 2.5% is anticipated in the UK, Belgium, Germany and Italy.
