RAI, Canal Plus enter digital TV pact in Germany

Article Abstract:

Italian state broadcaster RAI reached an agreement with French Media group Canal Plus SA to form a digital television alliance that will split the nascent sector into two camps and could make it tougher for operators to make a profit. Under the terms of the agreement, RAI will buy up to a 10% stake in Telepiu, the Italian digital-TV company that is 90% controlled by Canal Plus. The two companies said a separate 35% stake in Telepiu could be sold later to other investors, with the final details, including an industrial plan, to be announced by the end of January.
