CORNINGWARE SETS SIGHTS ON INDIA

Corning Consumer Products Company (CCPC) of USA will enter the Indian cookware market through the Crystal Group subsidiary OM Household Appliances Ltd. The Crystal group makes kitchenware and has 1.28 lakh dealer outlets all over India. CCPC is emphasising on the wedding gift segment of the market though it recognises the competition posed by stainless steel. CCPC's main brands are Corningware, Pyrex- ware, Revereware and others for which glass manufacturers are located in New York, Illinois, Virginia and Pennysylvania. (nr)

TEXTILE PROCESSING PLACED UNDER COMPOUND LEVY
Article Abstract:
The ministry of finance has planned to put the Rs14,000 core textile processing sector under compounded levy. This is expected to increase excise collections to Rs2000 core in 1998-99 from Rs1700 crore in 1997-98. The ministry has proposed a duty of Rs1.5 lakh per chamber every month on processed cotton and man- made fabrics which are sold at Rs30 per square metre or less and Rs2 lakh per chamber monthly for higher categories.
