Ratings agency wants to clarify operating earnings; S&P hopes to clean up corporate profit reports

Standard & Poor's is preparing a letter to Wall Street executives asking for better reporting of company earnings that will be less confusing for analysts and investors. Terms like"pro forma earnings" are not part of the accepted accounting practices that make accurate ratings possible.

Exxon's net slid 26% in the second quarter

Article Abstract:

Exxon Corp. posted a decline of 26% in its net income for the second-quarter of 1999. Increased crude prices were balanced out by reduced profits in refining and chemicals. Exxon posted $1.21 billion in net income for the period. During the same period in 1998, the company reported $1.62 billion. Exxon's revenues improved slightly from $29.37 billion to $29.42 billion.
