Razed hopes: Korean Americans struggle to rebuild after riots

Article Abstract:

Korean-owned stores were among those looted and destroyed during the violent riots in Los Angeles, CA, in Apr 1992. Some of the Korean American shopowners were dismayed that police protection was nonexistent during the riots. The absence of any police protection forced many of the store owners to arm and defend themselves and their property. Although some 2,000 Korean American-owned businesses were affected and damage rose up to $400 million, most of the Korean Americans have started to reconstruct what was once their property.

Block bookings: Asian investors swoop on cut-price US hotels

Article Abstract:

The US real estate industry in the early 1990s has seen the drop in price of properties including hotels which are being sold at heavily discounted rates. Hong Kong investors as well as Taiwanese and Korean buyers have been avid patrons of such cheap properties. These Asian investors prefer smaller and less luxurious acquisitions. The Japanese, on the other hand, have earlier done the same in the 1980s and are thus, simply maintaining their acquisitions hoping for better times.
