Article Abstract:

R.K. Kadian, a 47-year-old psychologist and activist, has been actively working since 1992 to improve literacy levels among women in the villages of the Haryana state in India. Women form these villages are realizing that literacy can be their means to advance from toiling in the farmlands to working in cooperatives, as well as to provide India's requirements for vocational training as the country embarks on an industrialization drive, however, faces obstacles from men's fears that education will make their wives unfaithful, as well as from the deeply-embedded norms and traditions of India on gender.

Human-rights group denounces Enron; company accused of failing to stop abuse of protesters by Indian police

Article Abstract:

Enron Corp is being accused of not stopping the Indian police in the commission of human-rights abuses against protesters to the establishment of the firm's power plant in the country. Human Rights Watch published a report detailing offenses against peaceful assembly and freedom of expression and the use of excessive force and arbitrary detentions against the protesters. After overcoming complaints of unfair acquisition of land, environmental degradation and corruption, Enron has finally succeeded in putting up the plant in the state of Maharashtra.

Enron bids for new projects

Article Abstract:

Enron Corp. is planning to pursue additional projects in India as the construction of its $2.5-billion Dabhol plant resumed. The project has been delayed for 16 months after the company battled lawsuits, bureaucrats and a nationalist state government that was against the power project. The company has bid for four private power projects in the Tamil Nadu state worth more than $1 billion. Enron will also form joint venture with other multinational companies that are planning to invest in the country.
