Reality bites

Article Abstract:

Foreign bankers have become increasingly cautious about their work in communist Vietnam. Foreign banks have operated in the country since 1992. Some are profitable, and there have been big deals, including two major loans in Aug 1997. However, the 24 foreign banks are competing fiercely for a decreasing number of potential foreign clients, and for business with the few local companies considered safe. They operate in conditions including restricted and unstable banking laws, a limited skilled workforce, and increasing enactments of the death penalty for corrupt officials.

Reality bites

Article Abstract:

There were a number of developments in Asia in 1996 which seemed to have the potential to threaten the peace and prosperity which the region has enjoyed over recent years. Economic growth rates slowed down, and there was considerable political instability in the region. China became more confrontational, especially in long-standing territorial disputes with Taiwan and Japan, while the election which produced a new prime minister in Thailand was widely rejected as being extremely corrupt.

Pulling back the curtain

Article Abstract:

The wider availability of information is beginning to have a significant impact on political developments in Asia. This has been seen recently in the resignation of Japanese Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto, a sign that political leaders must now face collective judgment. It is now clear that political leaders will be rapidly held to account for poor economic policies. Accurate information will play a key role in abolishing cronyism and establishing sound monetary policy in Asia.
