Article Abstract:

The ruling Labor party has performed poorly in terms of the British trasnportation system, according to public opinion polls. The government appears to have decided that fuel taxes cannot be raised by more than inflation any longer, partly due to rises in petroleum prices world wide, which makes tax rises more evident. One solution would be to spend funds raised from fuel taxes on transportation improvements, and this could include an incentive for motorists to replace cars more than 10-years-old.

Poor John

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom public is critical about the government's transportation policy. The government is realising that transportation cannot be used as an unlimited source of taxes. Gasoline taxes are higher in the UK than in most other countries, yet government spending on transportation is low. Fuel taxes hit motorists in rural areas, and do not tax urban drivers enough. There are supporters of the idea of road pricing, and motorists appear to be willing to fund transportation improvments.

High sierra

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom transportaion policy has been muddled under the Labor government. Fuel taxes are high and spending on roads is low, while London Underground has seen a key line closed at a peak tourist period. A new stratgic rail authority is planned and there is provision for a new transportation bill. There is some improvement in the privatized railroad system, and passenger numbers are increasing. Railroads become more attractive with high levels of traffic congestions.
