Article Abstract:

Avery Associates used a construction management contract to build the new IMAX Cinema, Waterloo, London, England. Contractors put forward tenders for the work fairly early in the design process. Within the management contract the contractors were able to use their own expertise within the detailed design framework. Around 25 contractors worked on the building. The cheapest contractors were not always used and were chosen following a series of interviews. Fitting the sound and projection equipment proved to be complex.

Building corbelled brickwork

Article Abstract:

Brick corbelling is made up either of single point supports or continuous oversailing courses, each projecting beyond the one below. When bedding corbel bricks, it is important to allow them to tilt 'backwards' or 'into' the main wall. The bricks will settle slightly until level as successive courses are tapped into place. It is important to be aware that brick corbelling should not exceed the limits recommended in Part 3 of BS5628, 'Code of practice for use of masonry.'
