A new niche in 3-D

Article Abstract:

The computer graphics industry is booming. Workstation manufacturers such as Silicon Graphics have flourished while the rest of the computer industry declined. Nintendo and other video-game makers have benefited by adapting these revolutionary workstations to low-cost consumer products. The dramatic drop in the price of advanced, three-dimensional computer graphics from the over $100,000 range to the $10,000 range helped to fuel this growth. A US firm, S3, dominates the market for graphic accelerators, which are chips that speed up bit-blitzing or the transferring of information.
