Refurbishment; altared states

Article Abstract:

Various churches in the United Kingdom have undergone renovatory work often to restore the medieval character of the buildings. The Chapel at Burnham Abbey, Slough, has been thoroughly cleaned and interior fittings renewed. St. Mary's Church, Oxfordshire, has been returned to its medieval design which gives more open space for worship. St. John the Baptist church is a listed building but a meeting room has been succesfully constructed which does not obscure the church architecture. St Francis Church, Nottingham, has been redesigned to bring the altar closer to the body of the church.

Hall of residence

Article Abstract:

Architects Susanna Lumsden and Patrick Dillion have converted a Victorian church into a one-bedroomed house for a professional person plus two flats, with the potential for a three-bedroom family house at a later date. Materials such as steel and glass have introduced an element of light into the former church, while still retaining the rich feel of the building. White has been used to cover original elements and a theme of blue runs through the interior.

Refurbishment: Red letter days in Liverpool

Article Abstract:

Liverpool-based architect firm A+U:G is expanding its portfolio of refurbishments and interiors in the mainly run-downs ares of Liverpool. Converting a former car showroom and garage into the ZIBA restaurant and bar has allowed A+U:G to use existing materials and structures to create an American style setting. Steel, limestone, timber and brick were used in the ZIBA design to maintain an overall feeling of space and continuity in the mainly bohemian area.
